Corset's History

In the beginning of the XIX century the metal eyelets allowed an even tighter corset without the danger of tearing the cloth, and the busk divided in two allowed it to be closed and opened without having to untie the binding. The waists were narrower, and the doctors more worried…

However, most of the horror stories told about corsets are exceptions or legends. Women who practiced to reach extremely tiny waists, 16 inches or less, took place with about the same frequency and in the same social context of the clinical cases of anorexia nowadays. Reports on perforation of internal organs are uncommon, but they exist; frequent fainting, attributed before to the supposed “feminine fragility”, are recognized today as the respiratory capacity reduction by the pressure in the lungs.
